In the week of "El Clasico" it is impossible not to remember Mesut Ozil (Gelserkirshen, 1988), the brilliant footballer who amazed the fans of Real Madrid and who had the best matches of his career against Barcelona. "Retired" for a year, Ozil has not severed his relationship with football. The qualification against City, "El Clasico", "Champions", Mourinho-Guardiola duels, Guler, his physical change... Ozil has talked about everything with the Spanish newspaper "Marca".
A year ago you decided to quit football. Do you miss it?
The truth is, not yet. I am very proud of my career and all the big clubs I have played for. The decision I made a year ago was well thought out and I knew exactly what I wanted. I enjoy life with my family in Istanbul to the fullest. I had offers from Saudi Arabia, Qatar and other leagues, but I didn't want to and I don't regret it.
What have you been doing in the last year?
I am enjoying every second with my family. I also have my own businesses that keep me busy.
Are you still in touch with the world of football or are you keeping your distance?
Something in between. I still watch the matches, especially those of Real Madrid, Arsenal and Fenerbahçe. On the phone, of course, I keep in touch with old teammates who have become friends over time.
Have you seen Manchester City-Real Madrid? I don't need to ask who you were with…
Yes, it was a fantastic match. City showed why nobody wants to play against them. They dominated the game most of the time…. But Madrid was very intelligent, as always. I shouted 'Hala Madrid' after Rydiger's penalty, so you can imagine how I experienced the game. I think that now Real Madrid is the big favorite. I believe they can win the Champions League.
We are also in the week of "El Clasico"...
At that time it was the most important match in the world of football. We played against the best Barca in history. Pep's Barça was on another level, certainly different from the current Barça. I think that at the moment the worldwide attention is focused more on matches like Liverpool-City or other duels in the Premier League. "El Clasico" has fallen and it's a shame. But that's not Relai's fault. The problem is Barça.
Is Real Madrid the favorite in this match?
Of course yes! Barcelona is fighting, trying. They have good players in all positions, but they have problems. Maybe they should pay more attention to themselves and their mistakes and not always complain about the referees.
