Rute Cardoso, the wife of 28-year-old Diogo Jota, was seen 'devastated' at the funeral of the former Liverpool striker. The couple had only celebrated their marriage on June 22, two weeks ago, and were parents to three children, the eldest of whom is four. Known since high school, Diogo and Rute's story was like those of a fairy tale, but the tragic accident in the early minutes of July 3 ended a feeling that had lasted for 13 years. Unlike any funeral, Rute today was dressed in white, just like the veil from two weeks ago.
The hearses carrying the bodies of Diogo Jota and Andre Silva entered the Church of the Resurrection in Gondomar at 11:07 this Saturday, in their hometown near Porto. Led by the Catholic priest of the diocese and thousands of people present, friends and relatives accompanied the two brothers who tragically lost their lives two days ago for the last time.
Liverpool, Portugal and Penafiel players were present at the ceremony. Many international football personalities, journalists and club and institution leaders paid tribute to the players.
With flowers in their hands, tears in their eyes, and the bells ringing mournfully, the two brothers were escorted to their final resting place to the applause of their fans.
