Kosovo and Switzerland drew 1-1 in their final World Cup qualifier in Pristina on Tuesday. During the match, Albanian-born midfielder Granit Xhaka was booed by the home crowd.
The media in Serbia have rushed to dedicate several articles to Xhaka. The Serbian media, “B92” chooses to write: “Xhaka was booed in Pristina : “ It hurts me ”.

After the end of the first half in Pristina, a Swiss journalist approached the "KOHË" journalists and asked them why the fans were whistling every time Granit Xhaka had the ball.
After it was explained to him that the boos were related to a statement by Xhaka about the decision of Leon Avdullah and Albian Hajdari to represent Kosovo, the Swiss journalist was clear and said this to his colleague in the journalists' stand at "Fadil Vokrri".
The journalist was from "Blick", the very powerful Swiss media outlet for which Xhaka made the statement that brought him constant boos in Pristina, in his "home".
The statement was made at the beginning of last week, before Xhaka had even joined the Swiss national team and after an excellent performance with Sunderland against Arsenal.
The Blick team visited Xhaka at his family home in Basel. During the interview, Xhaka was asked if it hurt "the departure of Avdullah and Hajdar from the Swiss Football Association."
The 33-year-old initially spoke about the quality of the two players.
" Players with their qualities are definitely something you don't want to give up. From their perspective, the point is to be able to assess their status ," Xhaka had initially said, going on to talk about the two players.
" Would they manage to secure a regular starting position for the Swiss national team in the next three or four years? I would doubt it, considering who is not playing for us at the moment, but is further along in their career. Ardon Jashari was with us for three years and has made four appearances.
"Is Leon ahead of Ardoni? I don't think so. But he's a good guy, otherwise he wouldn't be playing every game for Hoffenheim. Maybe he lacked a little patience with Switzerland. But ultimately it's their decision to play for Kosovo, which is playing at a very high level now ," Xhaka added. Jashari is part of Milan and plays in a similar position to Avdullah.
Not all media outlets in Kosovo, especially various social media sites, interpreted Xhaka's statement correctly. Not all mentioned the fact that Xhaka spoke about the qualities of Avdullah and Hajdar and the statement that Kosovo was playing at a very high level.
Hajdari was also asked about Xhaka's statement at the pre-match press conference. His statement was also distorted. It was written that "the decision to play for Kosovo was made with the heart", making the whole issue even more emotional. In fact, Hajdari is not heard in the press conference mentioning "the heart" when asked about Xhaka's statement.
On Wednesday morning, the main media in Switzerland had articles about the “whistling against Xhaka.” They have often criticized Xhaka, among other things, for his actions in the matches with Serbia, which made all Albanians proud, but also for the “fraternal matches” with Kosovo.
