After more than four years of suspension from international activities, a Russian representative will return to competitions organized by FIFA. The latest decision by the world football governing body is seen as the first step towards the gradual return of Russian football to the international stage, following sanctions imposed in 2022, when Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.
According to the decision, Russia's U-15 national team will participate in qualifying matches for the first edition of the U-15 World Cup, a new tournament being organized by FIFA. Russia has been included in a mini-group that will be held in Azerbaijan from October 22 to 31.
Debates about Russia's return to international competition have been ongoing for some time, but FIFA has so far avoided taking an official stance on the issue. The inclusion of the U-15 team is seen as a signal that the process of return may have begun.
If FIFA decides to lift the suspension of the Russian national team completely, UEFA is expected to follow suit, paving the way for Russian clubs to return to European competitions. Such a decision could also affect the return of the Russian national team to official international activities next season.
