World football's governing body, FIFA, has unexpectedly cancelled around 2,000 hotel rooms in some of the World Cup host cities, just months before the tournament begins.
According to the Philadelphia Hotel Association, the cancellations include four downtown hotels. FIFA had previously reserved about 10,000 rooms in the area, but a significant portion of them have been released without any official explanation.
The association's president, Ed Grose, stated that this move was not welcomed, but it is not expected to have a major impact on the sector: "It was not something we liked, but it is not the end of the world. These rooms will be back on the market and can be reserved by fans who plan to visit Philadelphia ."
A similar situation has been reported in Mexico City, another World Cup host city. According to local hotel industry representatives, out of about 2,000 rooms initially reserved, nearly 800 have been canceled by FIFA.
Sector leaders in Mexico have explained that these cancellations are related to a review of FIFA's organizational needs. According to them, preliminary reservations were made to avoid possible shortages, but later it turned out that some of them would not be used.
