Athletes representing North Korea at the Paris Olympics who manage to win medals are expected to be rewarded by communist leader Kim Jong Un when they return home.

Gifts are not very common in the Western world, but Kim Jong Un uses them and they include luxury apartments, cars and even refrigerators.

Some of the athletes who excelled and won medals for North Korea were awarded in 2013, after the London Olympics. State news agency KCNA reported at the time that some athletes moved into luxury homes along the Pothong River in the capital, Pyongyang.

Luxury cars and even refrigerators were handed out to those who performed well, a stark contrast to those who failed, who ended up doing forced labor after embarrassing the nation.

The gold medalists at London 2012 were Om Yun-chul, An Kum-ae and Kim Un-guk.

Weightlifting champion Om was ecstatic at the time, thanking the dictator for "special care".

"We athletes were able to raise the dignity and honor of Korea thanks to the deep loving care of Kim Jong-un, who has always led us in every match with strength and courage," he said at the time.

Long-distance runner Kim Kum-ok was also given a luxury apartment.

North Korea's athletes in Paris have not reached the heights of London when the country won three gold medals, but with four medals they have collected so far a reward is likely to await in return.

The small contingent in Paris won two silver medals, one in table tennis and one in diving, and two bronze medals again in diving, and another in boxing.
