Authorities in Toulouse, France, have imposed a new security measure to prevent urban unrest during sporting events considered high-risk.
The city's mayor, Jean-Luc Moudenc, has announced that a curfew will be implemented for all unaccompanied minors under the age of 16 during matches deemed "sensitive." According to the decision, the restriction on movement will be in effect from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.
The measure will not be implemented permanently, but will be activated on a case-by-case basis, depending on the assessment of the risk posed by a sporting event or large public gathering. Local authorities emphasize that the main goal is to prevent episodes of violence and maintain security during sports celebrations.
The decision comes against the backdrop of incidents recorded during the 2022 World Cup. The victories of the Moroccan national team and then the match between Morocco and France brought massive celebrations in several European cities, which in some cases degenerated into clashes with the police, vandalism and damage to public property.
Recently, tensions have also been recorded after PSG's triumph in the UEFA Champions League, when incidents and clashes were reported in several areas of Paris during celebrations.
The measure taken by Toulouse has drawn comparisons with similar policies implemented in Italy. Italian authorities have in certain cases used emergency orders to restrict access to sensitive areas during high-attendance events. Meanwhile, since 2023, with the entry into force of the Decreto Caivano, the use of the measure known as DASPO Urbano has been extended to minors over 14 years of age, prohibiting entry to areas considered a risk to public safety.
French authorities defend the decision by arguing that the curfew aims to protect public order and reduce the risk of incidents on nights when sporting excitement can lead to mass gatherings and tensions on the streets.
