Spain coach Luis De La Fuente on Monday submitted his provisional 55-man World Cup squad to FIFA, with Alvaro Morata and Dani Carvajal notably missing from the list. The two veterans have not been included in the 26-man squad that will take part in the tournament.
The Spanish coach's decision confirms suspicions in recent days that he is considering a squad overhaul. According to Spanish daily AS, De La Fuente has decided to leave out two players who have been key to La Roja's recent successes.
This means that three of the four captains of Spain who won the European Championship last summer in Germany will not be available for the World Cup, marking a significant change in the team's structure.
Both Morata and Carvajal have played a key role in the Spanish national team's recent triumphs, making the decision a difficult one for the coach. However, inconsistent form and fitness issues have significantly influenced this choice.
Carvajal has been plagued by injuries and, even when fit, has not featured regularly for Real Madrid. Morata, on the other hand, has failed to find his form at Como, a team where he was looking for a sporting renaissance. The Spanish striker has scored just one goal in 28 games this season.
