Breathless football, Jurgen Klopp is tough on the Club World Cup

Modern football has now become a "machine" that "grinds" matches without rest. The alarm has been sounded several times by footballers, sports doctors and above all coaches. Among the most authoritative voices is that of Jurgen Klopp, the former Liverpool coach, who for years has been denouncing the "inhuman" calendar imposed on clubs and national teams. In recent hours, his alarm on this delicate topic has returned:

" Last year it was the 'Copa America' and the European Championship. This year we have the Club World Cup, next year it will be the World Cup of Nations. This means that for the players involved there is no real recovery period, neither physically nor mentally. Of course, footballers earn a lot of money, but even in the NBA they earn a lot and have 4 months off a year.

The point is, Virgil Van Dijk has never had these breaks, in his entire career... I'm afraid players will start getting injured like never before. If it doesn't happen next season, it will happen during the 2026 World Cup or right after.

"Players are expected to play every game as if it were a final, they are told this 70 or 75 times a year. It cannot continue like this, it is necessary to guarantee them rest. Without it, they will not be able to provide optimal performance in the long term. If they can no longer do this, the whole product loses value to those who sell it ."

In recent years, the international calendar has become a nightmare, also due to the changes imposed by the pandemic. From 2021 (the year of the European Championship) until today, UEFA and FIFA competitions for national teams have increased significantly, without a single moment of respite, while even the biggest clubs have seen their workload increase significantly, between the new Champions League and the new Club World Cup.

Is football in danger of self-destructing like this? The intensity is at its peak, injuries are increasing, and even fans are starting to talk about “saturation.” Either the direction is changed, or the future of the most beautiful game in the world could collapse under the weight of unstable calendars.
