Italian football is once again facing serious controversy over its refereeing system. The head of the Referees' Association, Gianluca Rocchi, has reportedly been placed under investigation by Italian authorities, in a matter that brings back memories of the "Calciopoli" scandal of two decades ago.
What is being investigated?
The investigation is focused on the 2024-2025 season, with suspicions surrounding possible interference in referee decisions. According to reports, authorities are investigating whether this was due to human error or a wider influence scheme, similar to the one that rocked Italian football in 2006.
Udinese-Parma episode
One of the main cases under investigation is the match between Udinese and Parma.
An episode of handball was being reviewed in the VAR room.
Initially, VAR referee Daniele Paterna spoke out against awarding the penalty.
A few seconds later, he changes his stance and suggests a penalty.
The main referee, Fabio Mareska, is called to review the footage and decides on a penalty.
Udinese won the match 1-0, with Tauvin scoring from the penalty spot.
This sudden reversal of the decision has raised questions about possible external influence.
Suspicions of interference by Roki
According to a report prepared by Domeniko Roça (subsequently archived by sports justice), there is a hypothesis that:
Gianluca Roki physically intervened near the VAR room
He is suspected of attracting the referees' attention by knocking on the glass.
After this intervention, the referees decided to call the main referee for a review.
These allegations remain part of the investigation and have not been officially confirmed by criminal justice.
The Inter-Verona case

The episode happened before Inter's decisive goal.
