French footballer falls from waterfall and dies, 22-year-old tried to take a selfie with his girlfriend

French footballer Alexis Vergos has died after slipping off wet rocks while taking a selfie with his girlfriend at a beautiful spot in Thailand.

According to Koh Samui police, an autopsy on the 22-year-old confirmed the cause of death as head trauma. The accident site, one of southern Thailand's most popular tourist attractions, has been the scene of similar tragedies in the past.

Quimper Ergué Armel FC, the club where he played, expressed its condolences on social media: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Alexis Vergos, son of Thierry, coach of the C team and volunteer of the club. Alexis started playing football with us at the age of 6 and played in the adult team until two seasons ago. The club joins his family and friends in mourning."
