Olympic surfing judge Ben Lowe has returned home from the Paris Games after posing for a photo with Australian athletes Ethan Ewing and Bede Durbidge, who are competing in the disciplines he is judging.
The image was uploaded to Instagram and quickly became a talking point.
The post was captioned: ' these three guys from Straddie (Stradbroke Island) are doing their thing at the Olympics ' and prompted an immediate response from the International Surfing Association (ISA).
Amid calls of possible bias, given that Lowe may have rated Ewing as he chases an Olympic medal, the ISA removed Lowe from his duties.
' It is inappropriate for a referee to interact in this way with an athlete and his team ,' the ISA said in a statement.
Lowe, who is an experienced WSL referee, has been suspended in accordance with the ISA's code of conduct and the International Olympic Committee's code of ethics, the ISA confirmed.
