If Faruk Koca, until recently the president of the Turkish football team Ankaraguçu, is found guilty of all the charges against him, he could be sentenced to 13 years in prison.
On Tuesday, Koca expressed regret in court for the attack on Halil Umut Meler, the referee of the Turkish Super League match between Ankaragucu and Rizespor. After entering the field, at the end of the match, Koca punched the referee in the head, who then fell to the field and was subjected to an additional physical attack by local hooligans, who also entered the field.
The Turkish championship was interrupted for almost two weeks due to this incident and the attacked referee suffered moderate head injuries.
Koca left the Ankaraguçu president's office a few days after the incident. He expressed regret for the attack, but also denied threatening Judge Meler with death, for which he is also charged. Koca was immediately arrested and questioned, but released on bail.
– “This was the first time in my life that I was involved in a physical conflict, but part of the accusation is not true. I did not threaten Judge Meler that I would kill him. I expressed regret for my act earlier, and now I express regret in court," said Koca, who expects the trial to continue at the end of February.
Absolutely crazy scenes between Ankaragucu's 1-1 draw with Rizespor.
