In December, it was 10 years since Michael Shumaker's tragic accident in the French Alps. Since then, information about the health status of the Formula 1 legend has been very scarce, as the Shumaker family has asked for privacy.
After collapsing while skiing and hitting his head on a rock, Shumaker spent 250 days in a hospital coma before being allowed to return home. Few have seen or visited the seven-time world champion since he suffered his fatal brain injury and reports of the German's condition are extremely rare. But recently the former British star of Formula 1, Johnny Herbert, has spoken about Shumit's condition, showing interesting details.
" I have only heard news secondhand. I've heard from Formula 1 people that he's really able to sit at the dinner table, but I don't know if that's true or not. We haven't heard much from the family and that's understandable. This has always been part of Michael and the family's way of keeping everything very private, very secretive. It's been that way since his racing days ", says Herbert, who further adds: " We would all like to know that things are moving in a positive way. But because we have no information, we can assume that he is not yet in a position where he has a chance to recover. In my opinion, and I have to emphasize this, because we haven't heard anything from the family, this indicates that unfortunately he is probably in a similar situation as he was immediately after the accident. I suppose the family is waiting for science to come up with something that will hopefully bring back the Michael we all knew and for the people who only saw him through TV pictures when he was dynamic on the track ," said Johnny Herbert to British media. who was teammates with Shumaker in 1994 and 1995 in the ranks of the Benetton team.
Shumaker turned 55 on January 3, and he continues to receive treatment at his home in Lake Geneva.
