The emperor of German football, Franz Beckenbauer closed his eyes two days ago at the age of 78.
The legend won two Ballon d'Ors and enjoyed the World Cup trophy with Germany as a player and coach, being one of only three people in the world to do so.
The last twelve months were not the best for Beckenbauer. The former defender's last public appearance was on January 6, 2023, and since then he was bedridden after several operations, having difficulty even speaking, reports Bild.

On the Instagram page, "Kitzhof" shared a photo showing Franz Beckenbauer together with his son Joel, wife Heidi, hotel director Johannes Mitterer and chef Jurgen Bartl.
"Football legend Franz Beckenbauer invited people to a carp dinner at the #hotelkitzhof today," read the accompanying Instagram post, clearly proud of welcoming the emperor to his premises.
In this photo he is already a 'shadow of himself', his posture is slightly stooped and he looks weak.
The newspaper Bild published this Wednesday the last public words of the "Kaiser" and they are from his foreword to a book.
"Dear friends, Germany became the world champion for the fourth time in 1990. Personally, that title is very close to my heart, not only because I won it as a coach, but more because I had such a unique team.
You have to be 11 friends, I told the players, and we were more than just friends, because the substitutes, assistant coaches, doctors and other staff became friends. A close-knit group, one might say.
We members of that generation still meet regularly today and you only do it with friends. It was often said that I only said one sentence in the dressing room: 'Let's go play football'. It was a bit more because winning the World Cup is a big deal, so sometimes I had to be a bit louder. But it's basically correct because you can only be successful if you have fun playing football," the book's foreword reads.
