Tottenham Hotspur want to sack the coach who brought them their first European

Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of a major change, with recent reports suggesting that manager Ange Postecoglou is likely to be sacked in the coming days after a poor season in the Premier League, despite historic success in the Europa League.

According to renowned journalist Santi Aouna, the club have held direct talks with Brentford boss Thomas Frank as a possible successor, while other names such as Fulham's Marco Silva and Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola are also on the list of candidates. The development comes as Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has expressed great dissatisfaction with the club's 17th place in the Premier League, its lowest position since the 1976/77 season.

Ange Postecoglou, who took charge of Tottenham in the summer of 2023, achieved a remarkable feat by leading the club to the Europa League trophy, Spurs' first major trophy in 17 years. The victory secured their qualification for the 2025/26 Champions League season, an achievement that was enthusiastically received by the fans. However, a disappointing performance in the Premier League, where Tottenham finished 17th with just 38 points, has cast doubt on the Australian coach's future. The poor season was marked by unexpected defeats to teams such as Luton Town and Sheffield United, as well as a lack of consistency in play, despite heavy investment in the transfer market, including the acquisitions of players such as Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro.

According to Miguel Delaney of The Independent, the chances of Postecoglou keeping his job are "less than 5%", with Daniel Levy reportedly determined to change the direction of the club. Despite his attacking style and philosophy known as "Angeball", Postecoglou has failed to convince the Spurs board that he can return the team to the expected level of competition in the Premier League.

Recent talks between Tottenham and Brentford boss Thomas Frank have sparked speculation that the Dane could be the preferred choice to replace Postecoglou. According to a post on X by journalist Santi Aouna, talks with Frank focused on the club's project and potential transfer targets for the summer transfer window. Frank, who has transformed Brentford into a Premier League contender since their promotion in 2021, is known for his flexible tactical style and ability to develop young players, such as Ivan Toney and Bryan Mbeumo.

TEAMtalk's Fraser Fletcher reported in December 2024 that Frank would be open to a move to Tottenham, but was aiming to finish the season with Brentford. With the season now over and Brentford finishing in mid-table, Frank could be ready to take on a bigger challenge. Analysts believe his ability to build a disciplined and efficient team with limited resources makes him an ideal candidate to revive Tottenham.

In addition to Thomas Frank, Tottenham have also been considering other candidates. Journalist Ben Jacobs revealed to TEAMtalk that Fulham's Marco Silva is another name the club is interested in. Silva has impressed with his work at Fulham, turning the team into a solid force in the Premier League and showing tactical ability in matches against big teams. However, competition for him could be strong, as other clubs such as West Ham are also said to be targeting him.

Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola is also on the shortlist, but his appointment could be more difficult as he has only just signed a new contract with the Cherries. His quick, attacking style has caught the eye of Spurs, but the cost of his move from Bournemouth could prove to be a stumbling block.

Meanwhile, Tottenham fans have been speculating about a possible return for Mauricio Pochettino, who managed the club from 2014 to 2019 and led them to the Champions League final. However, Ben Jacobs reported that Pochettino is fully committed to his role as coach of the United States national team, with a focus on the 2026 World Cup. This makes a return unlikely at this time, disappointing some fans who were hoping for an emotional comeback.
