Marseille has been gripped by strong tensions this evening, as clashes between Newcastle and Olympique Marseille fans created chaos on the city's streets ahead of the match at the Orange Vélodrome.
Around 500 England fans arrived in the port city, while French police sent specialist units to high-risk areas near bars and pubs. In one incident, a group of Newcastle fans were dispersed with tear gas during a violent episode, footage of which is circulating on social media.
Although some fans of both teams were seen singing together against PSG, such friendly moments did not last long, as other footage showed clashes in the streets.

French authorities had deployed around 1,000 police officers to manage the situation, due to the over 3,000 England fans present in Marseille. Bouches-du-Rhône police issued a series of restrictive measures, including banning the movement of Newcastle fans in certain areas and banning the use of pyrotechnics near the stadium.
To control the second wave of fans from England, police said they will also use drones for monitoring in the city center and around the stadium.
The incidents have brought back memories of the severe riots at EURO 2016 in Marseille, when clashes between England and Russia fans turned into a major security crisis and left dozens injured.
Meanwhile, French authorities are calling for calm, while security measures remain tight until the end of the match.
