Former Cameroonian footballer Emmanuel Kunde has died at the age of 68.
The news was confirmed by the Cameroonian Football Federation, which described his passing as "a great loss for Cameroonian football."
Kunde remains in the memory of fans around the world for the goal he scored against England in the quarter-finals of the 1990 World Cup in Italy, a match that ended 3-2 in favor of the English after extra time.
Among the most glorious moments of his career is the decisive goal in the 1988 Africa Cup of Nations final against Nigeria, giving Cameroon the continental trophy. He had won the same trophy in 1984 and was part of the team that defeated Nigeria again in the final that year.
In a touching Instagram post, the former Chelsea and Inter striker described Kund as “an iconic figure in our footballing heritage”. He added: “ He was a fantastic footballer, a commanding tower in midfield and a defensive wall against which opponents would crash. He was also a brilliant passer and playmaker with phenomenal strength and incredible precision .”
Kunde was part of the "Invincible Lions" for 15 years, accumulating 102 appearances and scoring 17 goals with the national team from 1979 to 1992. He participated in two of Cameroon's greatest epics at the 1982 and 1990 World Cups.
He began his career at Mbankomo in Cameroon, then played for Tempete de Nanga-Eboko and Kanon Yaounde, before moving to France where he played for Laval and Reims. After his adventure in Europe, he returned to Cameroon where he ended his football career with Olympique Mvolie in 1992.
After retiring from football, Kunde continued to contribute as a coach, including periods in France and Gabon, while his name will always remain associated with the famous Kenon Sportif de Yaoundé club as a player and coach.
African football, and Cameroon in particular, has lost one of its most representative figures. The thoughts and prayers of the sporting community are with his family.
