In a tense climate that has accompanied international relations in recent weeks, Iran has confirmed its intention to participate in the 2026 World Cup. The message was conveyed from Madrid, within the premises of the Iranian embassy in Spain, where security measures have been strengthened.
The Iranian ambassador to Spain, Reza Zabib, began his speech by commemorating the victims of the ongoing conflict, paying homage to, according to him, “ the 100 murdered girls, innocent children who lost their lives .” The statement was made in a silent atmosphere, in the presence of the image of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
Asked by the Spanish daily "Diario AS" about the uncertainties that could affect the Iranian national team's participation in the upcoming world tournament, which will take place in the United States, Mexico and Canada, Zabib stated clearly: " Iran will go to the World Cup, we have the right to be there ."
He reiterated this stance regarding the fact that a large part of the matches will take place on American territory. " We have no problems, we will go ," the ambassador emphasized.
There is currently no official response from US authorities or tournament organizers regarding this issue. The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the US, Mexico and Canada, in an expanded format with 48 participating teams.
