Vedat Muriqi has made history for Spanish club Mallorca, becoming the team's all-time top scorer with 55 goals in La Liga. With this achievement, the Kosovar striker has left behind a big name in world football like Samuel Eto'o.
The 31-year-old has been in excellent form, not only as a goal scorer but also as a leader on the pitch for his team. His performances have also prompted a backlash from Mallorca fans, who are calling for him to be considered for the Ballon d'Or. However, the road to this success has been long and not without challenges.
About 12 years ago, Muriqi left Kosovo to continue his career in the Albanian championship, where he joined Teuta Durrës. His former coach at the time, Ilir Biturku, remembers the striker's beginnings.
According to Biturku, Muriqi was a promising player, with good technical and physical qualities, although the time he spent at Teuta was short.
" He was a young player from Kosovo, who was spoken of very well. He had technical qualities, was left-handed and had good physical abilities ," said Biturku.
However, strong competition in the offensive department meant that Muriqi did not find the necessary space in the team.
" At that time there were many quality and experienced strikers in the championship. The competition was very high ," he emphasized.
For this reason, Muriqi was loaned to Besa e Kavajës, a step that proved decisive for the continuation of his career.
Character and work as the key to success
Beyond on-field skills, Biturku also values a player's character as a key factor in his success.
" He was very hardworking, dedicated and always stood behind the training. He had passion, sacrifice and humility ," the former coach stated.
These qualities, according to him, have directly influenced Muriqi's current achievements with Mallorca.
The road to the top of football
After his experience in Albania, in 2014 Muriqi transferred to Turkey to Giresunspor, to then continue his career at increasingly higher levels, up to Fenerbahçe. A more difficult period was that at Lazio in Italy, where he failed to show his full potential.
His breakthrough came in Spain with Mallorca, where today he is considered one of the team's most important players and a historic figure for the club.
At the representative level, Muriqi has made an important contribution to Kosovo, scoring 32 goals so far.
