A UEFA referee has been arrested in the United Kingdom on suspicion of sexually assaulting a minor boy. The incident is believed to have taken place in a hotel before a European match the official had travelled to officiate. His identity has not yet been released by authorities.
According to reports, the incident was reported by the minor himself or by a person close to him, which led to the launch of investigations by the British police.
Details from the investigation
Sources cited by British media indicate that the judge had started a conversation with the minor in a public area of the hotel.
" He started talking to a boy in a public area of the hotel. He is alleged to have touched her and tried to pull her into his room. If this is proven, it is appalling and completely unacceptable ."
According to the same sources, the referee was arrested when he returned to the hotel with the UEFA delegation. The police questioned him.
After initial proceedings, he was released on bail pending the completion of the investigation.
Institutional reactions
In an official response, FIFA announced that the referee will not be considered for any international competition until the investigation is complete.
Meanwhile, UEFA has stated:
" We are monitoring the situation with great concern. In the meantime, the official will not be attending any UEFA matches ."
If the charges are confirmed, there is a possibility that the judge could be extradited to the United Kingdom to face justice.
