Football refereeing legend, Italian Pierluigi Collina, has shared with the public the strongest emotions he has experienced during his career.
In a recent interview, Colina revealed that the match that will forever remain in his heart is the 1999 Champions League final between Bayern Munich and Manchester United.
" This is the match that shook me emotionally like no other ," said Kolina. The final, held at the Camp Nou stadium in Barcelona, was one of the most dramatic in football history. Bayern took the lead in the sixth minute with a goal from Mario Basler, and maintained the score 1-0 until the 90th minute.
The Germans were holding the trophy in one hand, the fans were celebrating, the players on the bench were hugging each other, but then the miracle happened. In extra time, Manchester United scored twice, first through Teddy Sheringham and then through Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, turning everything upside down and securing the championship title in an incredible way.
Colin recalls the scene with great emotion: “ Suddenly, Manchester scored two goals in two minutes and everything changed. I will never forget the screams of the players and the English bench, it was like the roar of lions in the face of the cathedral-like silence on the Bayern side. The United players were running madly around the pitch, while the Bayern players were lying on the ground, devastated, crying with frustration. ”
He added that he had tried to console one of the German footballers: “ I approached one of them, but I couldn’t say anything other than: ‘Get up and fight, you still have 20 seconds!’ But at that moment I understood what football really is. Where all the emotions are given, where extreme joy and pain are shared. After this match, many people fell in love with football with all their hearts .”
This final remains one of the most memorable moments in the history of the Champions League, not only for its dramatic result, but for the indescribable emotions it caused among all football lovers around the world.
