South Africa have secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup knockout stage after defeating South Korea 1-0 in the final group stage match.

The only goal of the match was scored by Tapelo Maseko in the 63rd minute, giving the African team their first victory in this edition of the tournament and three important points for qualification.

With this success, South Africa closed the group stage with four points, leaving South Korea behind in the Group A standings and securing second place, which takes them to the knockout stage.

This is a historic moment for African football, as South Africa become the seventh team from the continent to advance past the group stage of a World Cup. The record for most qualifiers is held by Nigeria and Morocco with three each, followed by Ghana and Senegal with two each, while Cameroon and Algeria have achieved the feat once each.

In the round of 16, South Africa will face Canada, one of the 2026 World Cup hosts. The match is scheduled to take place on June 28.
