"Don't call them fans", Ceferin in harsh tones after the meeting

Alongside Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis, UEFA President Alexander Ceferin asked European countries to help eliminate hooliganism, which he considered the "cancer of football".

The appeal of the European football number one from Athens comes just a few days after the clashes that accompanied the football match between the AEK team and Dinamo Zagreb, where the Greek fan was killed.

" We are all saddened and angry because of these terrible things that have happened, because of senseless violence, because some people use football to do violence. What kind of person is it that attacks another person because of a jersey?

This is football cancer. Don't call them fans. They are the ones who use their ideas foolishly. That's enough. This must stop and it will stop. Violence and hooliganism are not only a problem for Greece, but also for Europe and beyond", said President Ceferin, referring to the bloody incidents in New Philadelphia.

"I ask everyone to help us to eradicate this cancer, not only from football, but also from society. Today we took a first step at the European level and we will do everything in our power to prevent something similar from happening again. We are determined. We got in touch with the prime minister after the events, we did our self-criticism and said that we will do everything we can and even more ", he concluded.
