The football world is in mourning after the passing of former German goalkeeper Georg Koch. He passed away at the age of 54 after a battle with pancreatic cancer, a disease he had been diagnosed with a year earlier.
Koh was one of the most renowned goalkeepers in European football, leaving his mark on several important clubs such as PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Rapid Vienna in Austria and Dinamo Zagreb in Croatia. He stood out for his talent and performances in goal, being part of European championships and competitions.
His career was also marked by a dramatic episode that significantly affected his life and professional journey. In 2009, during the Vienna derby between Rapid and Austria Vienna, a capsule exploded near his ear. The incident caused severe and irreparable damage to his hearing and balance, practically interrupting his further career development.
In 2024, when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, Koh spoke publicly about his health condition. “ The disease cannot be cured and I will die, but God has not yet decided when he will take me ,” he said with dignity.
The news of his death has shocked the football community and his former teammates and opponents on the pitch. Among the reactions was that of former German goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.
" It's a sad day. He left too soon. We often played against each other and he was almost always better than me ," Lehman said in a message of condolence for his former rival on the playing field.
The passing of George Koch marks the loss of a well-known figure in European football, who will be remembered both for his talent in goal and for the strength with which he faced life's challenges.
