A serious incident of violence in sports was recorded during a kickboxing match in Serbia, where the protagonists were Greek athlete Yannis Soukalas and his collaborator, Pavlos Kochliaridis.
After the Greek athlete defeated his Serbian rival in a match in Novi Pazar, about 100 people entered the ring and attacked the Greek team, brutally beating them. According to Koçliaridis, the incident occurred just seconds after Soukalas’s “knockout” victory over Serbian opponent Vahid Kicara. Many people violently entered the ring and hit the Greek athlete, who was transported to the hospital injured.
He stressed that the situation could have ended in tragedy, as the Greek team consisted of only four people, while about a hundred entered the ring. In a statement to the Greek media, Kochliaridis said that after Soukalas' victory, he and coach Nikos Ghijkas entered the ring to celebrate together with PAOK athlete Zisis Paguras.
According to him, Sukalas bowed and knelt to show respect to his opponent and to avoid any incident, as the atmosphere was already tense. However, while he was still on the ground, his opponent's brother punched him, knocking him completely down. He was kicked, punched and even hit with a chair for about two minutes, without the intervention of the police. According to him, they learned from a reliable source that one of the hooligans was seen with a knife.
