Argentina and Algeria will face off in the early hours of the morning, in a match that has aroused great interest among fans of both national teams. However, before the sporting challenge, incidents were recorded between supporters of the teams in Times Square in New York.
The fight broke out in one of the most frequented and photographed areas in the world, causing panic among passersby and tourists, who were forced to flee the scene.
Argentine fans had gathered for a “banderazo,” a well-known tradition of the country’s fandom, where supporters gather en masse with flags and chants to support their team before important matches. The rally had turned Times Square into Argentina’s blue and white colors, ahead of the opening Group J match.
A large number of Algerian fans, as well as French and, according to reports, Senegalese supporters, were also present in the same area, creating a tense atmosphere.
According to Argentine media outlet Infobae, citing French newspaper Le Parisien, the incident began with exchanges of provocative gestures and insults between groups of fans. The situation then escalated into physical clashes, with punches and kicks reported in the street.
Police intervened to bring the situation under control, while media reports said several fans were escorted and arrested after the incidents.
There was no type of problem between fans in this World Cup until today.
