The first season of the Champions League with the new format has just ended, but even before the final with Inter and PSG, a change has been decided, which will come into effect for the next edition. The clubs claimed to UEFA that the final could have been different with the new rule coming into effect.
UEFA has set a new rule for the knockout stage, with the tennis system to distribute the eight teams that come out first in the tournament phase with the joint ranking table. But the current edition did not guarantee the teams in the top eight, with the exception of the 1/16 round, the home advantage in the subsequent rounds, to play the return match in their stadium.
Thus, in the semi-finals of the tournament, the strange coincidence was recorded where the draw smiled on Inter and PSG, who played the return matches on their home field against Barcelona and Arsenal respectively, who were ranked higher than them. Thus, with the support of the fans, they had one more weapon at their disposal and managed to secure the grand final.
UEFA has now decided that in the knockout phase, the team with the best ranking in the joint group will always enjoy home advantage. Meanwhile, the proposal to avoid clashes between teams from the same country in the first rounds of the knockout phase, up to the quarter-finals, has not been approved.
