Didier Deschamps has left his future open after the 2026 World Cup, after which he is expected to step down as France coach. The veteran coach has not ruled out the possibility of taking charge of another national team in the future, including Italy.
During the press conference, where he presented the list of players gathered for the 2026 World Cup, Deschamps said that he is open to any professional opportunity that may present itself in the future.
" Coaching another national team like Italy? I don't rule anything out. At the moment it's not on the agenda for me. But I'm ready, everyone knows it. I'll think about this issue in the future ," declared the French coach.
His statements have caused numerous reactions in France, where the idea of a possible adventure on the Italy bench has not been well received by the sporting public.
Among the critics was the well-known journalist of "RMC Sport", Daniel Riolo, who reacted harshly to the possibility of Deschamps leading France's traditional rivals.
" From a human point of view I would experience it as a personal tragedy. I take it seriously. I know it's possible, as he has a past in Italy with Juventus and is a very well-known name there. But for me it would be a personal tragedy ," Riolo said.
Deschamps has led France since 2012, winning the World Cup in 2018 and turning the team into one of the most successful national teams of the last decade.
