The first leg of the Champions League round of 16 between Bayer Leverkusen and Arsenal ended in a 1-1 draw. The match took place at the BayArena stadium, with both teams sharing the points after a balanced encounter.
The most dangerous opportunity of the first half came in the 19th minute. Arsenal striker Gabriel Martinelli shot towards goal, but the ball was stopped by the post, leaving the score unchanged. The first half ended goalless, with the scores 0-0.
The second half started immediately with a goal for the home team. On a corner kick taken by Alejandro Grimaldo, Robert Andrish found himself free in the area and headed home, giving Leverkusen the lead.
Arsenal responded in the final minutes of regulation time. The Londoners were awarded a penalty after Malik Tillman was fouled in the area. Kai Havertz converted from the spot, levelling the score at 1-1.
After this draw, everything remains open for the return leg. Qualification for the next stage will be decided in a week at the Emirates Stadium in London.
