Xhxhi Bekali, the president of the Romanian team Steaua Bucharest, who made a stir with his derogatory statements about two Albanian clubs, Shkëndija of Tetovo and Drita of Kosova, is said to be originally from Albania.
At least that's what some Romanian media articles in the Internet Archive say.
Many such articles claim that Bekal is originally from the Balkans, and more specifically from Albania. They state that Bekal's ancestors were Aromanian, while his grandfather – whose name George (Xhixhi) Bekal inherited – had migrated from Korça in 1928.
" How Gigi Bekal's family arrived in Romania ", this is just one of the titles in the archive of Romanian online media, namely the newspaper, "Adevarul.ro".
Even the Romanian newspaper "Prosport" wrote two years ago that Xhixhi Bekal's family originated from Albania.
"The fact that Xhixhi Bekali comes from an Aromanian family, originally from Albania, is a well-known fact in the Romanian press ," this newspaper wrote, among other things.
There were also articles that said that Xhixhi Bekali had previously built a church in a village in Korça, as a sign of respect for the origins of his ancestors.
There is also a statement on the internet that is quoted as having been made by Xhixhi Bekali himself.
" My father was born in Albania, and my mother was born in Bulgaria. My father was expelled from Dobrogea, then he moved to Bukovina, then to Banat and again to Baragan, in the village of Zagna, near Braila. So, I was born there in 1958 ," Bekali is quoted as saying.
Gigi Becali is the president of Steaua Bucharest, a very well-known businessman in Romania, and his wealth is said to be over 1 billion euros.
He also has a career in politics in Romania and is a very well-known personality there. He can often be controversial.
His club was eliminated yesterday in the second round of the Champions League qualifiers by Shkëndija from Tetovo and after the match, Bekali said: Shkëndija is a Division C team. We should have beaten them 3, 4, 5 to nil!
Now, Steaua will play in the Europa League qualifiers, where they will face Kosovo champion Drita.
Also about this, Bekali had a comment last night: " If Kosovo also eliminates us, then let's leave football altogether !"
