Winter Olympics kick off with controversy, Milan engulfed by protests against US

Hundreds of protesters gathered in Milan on February 6 to protest the presence of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents and security measures taken before the opening ceremony of the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics, which included the closure of schools and the lockdown of parts of the city. The protest was prompted by the U.S. State Department’s announcement that federal agencies, including ICE, would help protect American citizens during the event.

Protesters, mostly students, gathered near the Polytechnic University with anti-ICE banners and criticized the impact of the Olympic Games, citing the high cost of living and the lack of social spaces. In parallel, on February 5, Greenpeace organized a protest in front of Milan Cathedral against the role of the company 'Eni' as a sponsor of the Games.

Italy's adventure in the women's hockey tournament at the Milan-Cortina 2026 Olympic Games has started in the best way. In the opening match at the Milan Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena, the 'blue' girls defeated France with a comprehensive score of 4-1.

It is the first historic victory for the Italian women's hockey team at the Olympic Games. Their only previous appearance, in Turin 2006, was unsuccessful.

Italy's goals came from Tutino in the 10th minute, Roccella in the 35th minute, Fantin in the 40th minute and Della Rovere in the 44th minute. France took the lead first, but De Serre's goal was not enough to avoid defeat.

The opening ceremony of the Olympics will take place at the San Siro stadium today at 8:00 PM, while the team sports have started competing earlier. The first medal in the individual competitions is expected tomorrow.
