Medon Berisha is becoming one of the characters of the moment in Italian football, as he is leaving his mark with his play and goals in Serie A where he wears the Lecce shirt. His heavy goal against Fiorentina gave the team the victory in the away game this weekend and undoubtedly for the striker it was extraordinary enthusiasm as he showed in an interview with the Italian media.
" I'm happy with my goal, but even happier with the three points we got at home. My celebration? It's not directed at anyone. It's a joke we play among friends, but it's not for anyone in particular. Congratulations to the boys, they did a great job, even those who came on as substitutes, but also those who didn't play.
The match was not easy because they were under pressure from the fans, the club and the dressing room. The atmosphere was tense. The fans started chanting against them before the match started. We went there calmly, to play, to win and in the end we did it. We were very focused and had the right attitude. In the first 10 minutes they made it a bit difficult for us. We couldn't find our balance, not even between the lines. But I was calm throughout the match because they weren't dangerous. When the penalty was given, I thought, 'I can't believe it, we can't throw away a great match like this'. In the end, VAR helped us a bit.
The last game in Florence I played as an attacking midfielder and I didn't expect it, while the other five I played as a defensive midfielder, but for me, it doesn't change much. We were good and compact. I want to congratulate the whole defensive line, but everyone helped the team, even Banda and Stulić.
The goal? I just remember making the slide and saying to myself 'something is going to happen now'. I felt it, because we won the ball in a very high area on the pitch. When Stulić opened it up to Morente, knowing him as a player, when I saw him cross, I thought it was going to go to the far post.
Ramadani and I are like brothers, he was very happy with my goal. My first phone call after the match? From my father; he instilled this passion for football in me. He was very happy, but so was my mother, who told me 'bravo!'
I've been at Lecce for four years and I know the environment well. I feel a bit like a leader here. But there are other leaders in the team, like our captain Falkone, Ramadani and Gaspar. But I repeat, I also feel like a leader.
Position on the field? With Giampaolo I was a central midfielder, for him the game started from the back. Now I'm doing better with coach Di Francesco, because I play between the lines and have more freedom of movement.
The number 10 shirt is a dream. I've always had it since the Primavera, even in the past, and I thought I'd like to wear it in the first team too. My idol has always been Modric, he still is.
"The fans? I always say: ours are wonderful, they always follow us and encourage us. I will miss them a lot when I leave, or rather, when I stop playing ," Berisha said, among other things, in his long interview.
