Karim Adeyemi's situation continues to disturb the atmosphere at Borussia Dortmund and the German national team, while Stefan Effenberg has now issued a very harsh warning.
The former Bayern captain sees the 23-year-old's career in serious danger and even speaks of a "dramatic decline."
Adeyemi has been fined 450,000 euros for illegal possession of weapons, a scandal that has caused strong reactions. It is not yet clear whether BVB or DFB will impose further sanctions. Borussia Dortmund is expected to hold a meeting with club officials to decide on possible disciplinary measures. Meanwhile, the German national team's sporting director, Rudi Völler, told ZDF that the matter would be treated "critically", but stressed that Adeyemi "will not be punished" without a fair analysis.
In his column for 't-online', Effenberg points out:
"For Adeyemi, the situation could become very, very difficult in the German national team."
He recalled his long suspension after the 1994 incident and warned:
“Adeyemi is on the verge of a dramatic decline.”
From a great start to stagnation
The speedy striker had started the season in excellent form, with six goal contributions in his first seven games, and was regarded as one of Dortmund's strongest points. But in recent weeks he has been stifled, both in performance and attitude.
Effenberg calls for immediate intervention:
BVB and DFB, according to him, have the obligation to carefully analyze the environment surrounding the player in order to get him back on the right track.
The 23-year-old has "tremendous potential," but, as Effenberg says, he risks "ruining his career" if he doesn't reflect and correct his behavior.
The current scandal could be a turning point for Adeyemi or the beginning of a dangerous descent.
