He was acquitted of rape charges, but it's not enough. Dani Alves must pay

Dani Alves was acquitted of rape charges, but that's not enough; the Brazilian must pay his former club over $4.5 million

Just months after being acquitted on appeal of rape charges, Dani Alves faces another piece of bad news. The former Brazilian defender, who was hoping to receive compensation for months spent in prison and the termination of his employment contracts, has been ordered by CAS to pay damages to Mexican club Pumas, which terminated his contract at the beginning of 2023.

Pumas terminated the contract after the player was arrested for allegedly raping a 23-year-old woman, activating a clause that provided for punishment in the event of a “public scandal” or criminal offense. FIFA initially ruled in Alves’ favor, but CAS overturned the decision, recognizing the validity of the termination of the contract “for justified reasons.”

More precisely, it forces the Brazilian to pay an amount higher than the $4.5 million requested by the Mexican club. In criminal terms, Alves was sentenced in 2024 to 4 and a half years in prison, but after 14 months behind bars, the sentence was overturned on appeal due to errors and contradictions during the process.
