The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has made a concrete attempt to convince Pep Guardiola to take over the Italian national team. According to Italian media reports, technical director Paolo Maldini and his advisor Leonardo met with the Catalan coach in Barcelona over the weekend, where they presented the Azzurri's new technical project.
Maldini, recently appointed FIGC technical director and president of Club Italia, together with Leonardo, have presented Guardiola with the federation's objectives and long-term vision. The project does not only depend on the Spanish coach's response and will continue even if he decides not to accept the offer.
Guardiola recently completed his decade-long spell at Manchester City and has made it clear in recent statements that he is in no rush to return to the bench immediately. However, that has not stopped the FIGC from trying to convince him to take charge of the Italian national team.
FIGC President Giovanni Malagò confirmed that the choice of the new coach must take into account not only the candidate's readiness, but also his requirements and compatibility with the federation's financial capabilities.
According to reports, Guardiola's response is expected to arrive within the next few hours or days. Meanwhile, Roberto Mancini and Andrea Pirlo continue to be mentioned on the list of candidates for the Italy coach's position.
