Ukrainian drones struck energy and military facilities in St. Petersburg in the early hours of Wednesday morning, just hours before international delegations and guests were due to gather for Russia's main economic forum. The attacks deal a significant symbolic blow to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to reports, several long-range drones crashed into oil depots after Russian air defense systems failed to neutralize them. Residents reported loud explosions, while thick plumes of black smoke rose over the city from the burning terminal.
St. Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov said the strikes targeted the Kirovsky and Krasnoselsky districts. Ukraine also hit the naval base and shipyard in Kronstadt, in the Leningrad region, the port where Russia's Baltic Fleet is based. Several naval vessels were reportedly damaged.

The attacks are considered particularly embarrassing for the Kremlin, as they occurred about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the site of the economic forum, where Vladimir Putin is expected to deliver a keynote address on Friday. Guests arrived for Wednesday's opening ceremony under a thick cloud of smoke, while some delegates were unable to travel to the city due to the temporary closure of St. Petersburg airport.
Some 20,000 participants from 130 countries are expected to attend the annual three-day summit, often described as Russia's answer to the World Economic Forum in Davos. Among the attendees are former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, right-wing American influencer Candace Owens and the Tate brothers.

Instead, the Kremlin has invited regional allies and other political partners. This year, the forum is attended by the presidents of Uzbekistan and Tanzania, as well as ministers from Cuba, Belarus and Saudi Arabia.
Kirill Dmitriev, Moscow's economic envoy, described the forum as a meeting of "sovereign countries." He criticized "globalist" rivals who attended the Davos Forum in Switzerland in January.
"Countries of the Global South are actively moving towards partnership with Russia and will be strongly represented," Dmitriev declared.
