29 years since Otranto, the tragedy that remained an open wound in Albanian
29 years from Otranto

Tomorrow is the 29th anniversary of the Otranto Tragedy, where over 80 boys and girls, mothers and fathers, lost their lives in their terrible flight to Italy out of fear of the riots of March 1997.

Like today, 9 years ago, in Vlora, I organized an international conference on this event, where I invited:

-Edi Rama – Prime Minister
-Giuseppe Marchionna – former mayor of Brindisi
-Costas Varotsos – famous Greek artist, who turned the ship pulled from the sea into a work of art, as a reminder that this tragedy will not happen again
-Bernardo Natarangelo – envoy of the President of the Puglia Region, etc.
Survivors and family members of those who lost their lives in that tragedy also participated and discussed in the conference.
They also sent letters:
-Romano Prodi
-Franz Vranitzky

On this occasion, upon my proposal, the Municipality of Vlora granted the title of "Honorary Citizen of Vlora" to Giuseppe Marchionna, former mayor of Brindisi, for the assistance provided to Albanian immigrants in 1991.

Also, like 9 years ago today, I organized a ferry trip to Otranto with the participation of survivors, family members and well-wishers.
At the Castello Aragonese in Otranto I organized a commemorative symposium for this tragic event.
