The protective embankments of the Bistrica River have burst during the night, causing major flooding in several villages in the area. The situation is most severe in the villages of Çukë, Konispol and Shalës.
According to reports, the Bistrica embankment in Çuka burst overnight, causing a real disaster for livestock. More than 500 heads of small and large cattle have drowned, while entire stables have been destroyed.
The situation is also critical in Konispol, where the Pavëll River has overflowed its bed near the bridge in Vila, isolating 6 villages of the Markat Administrative Unit: Markat, Dishat, Ninat, Janjar, Shalës and Vërve.
"The Minister of Defense, together with the mayor of Saranda and representatives of local structures, visited the Çuka area, where work has begun on the emergency closure of the Bistrica e Madhe embankment.
"The rainfall of recent days has affected agricultural land and families in the area. The Armed Forces, together with the local self-government, are closely monitoring the situation, as the water level has dropped significantly and work to normalize the situation continues," the Ministry of Defense announces.
Meanwhile, 25 families have been evacuated in Saranda, who will be temporarily accommodated in tents. Other residents have also been sent relief aid after the floods.
