An Albanian witnessed the tragic accident that happened on Tuesday, October 3, 2023 in Mestre, Venice, Italy, where a bus fell from the overpass and ended up on the railway line, causing 21 victims.
Bujar Bucaj, who is the owner of a bar in that area, saw the whole scene from where he was working and immediately went to give first aid.
"I was working in my restaurant which is in front of the railway. From the window of the bar, I saw the bus that crashed. When I saw the big smoke I ran. I crossed the railroad tracks and went there. I saw the bus overturned and there were people screaming ," he said.
Bujar says he tried to help but had no support from other people who saw and took pictures or called 911 waiting for their arrival.
"Since I come from a place where I lived the war, I know what it means when people are in trouble. I ran alone. There were other cars, they stopped but no one came to help me. I was looking for help.
There was a girl I managed to get away from. Then 3 people got out of the bus, but I don't know how they did it. There was a 16-year-old girl, a 20-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man. They managed to get out before the police came," he says.
The Albanian says that he asked for help but no one answered him.
"Brother and sister. The girl was no more than 3 years old while the brother was almost 10 years old. They were looking for the mother. I then panicked as I was alone in the middle of that smoke. Then the fire happened. I called for help. Upstairs there was people who filmed" said Bujar Bucaj.
Bujari says that 12 minutes after the accident, a police patrol came and then the firemen came, while the two little ones saved by him were admitted to the hospital.
He tries to tell what he saw from that tragic accident.
"My restaurant has a large glass window. I was watching the traffic when I saw something crash. I thought a bridge collapsed, as it caused a lot of smoke. I did not see the flame at first. The fire broke out after 8-10 minutes", says Bujar Bucaj, rejecting the theory that the bus was engulfed in flames before it crashed.
A serious accident took the lives of 21 people, among them 3 children. Meanwhile, 15 others were injured, where 4 of them are in a serious state of health.
The Prefect of Venice, Michele di Bari announced that all the victims of the accident have been identified. It is about 21 victims: nine Ukrainian citizens, four Romanians, three Germans, one Italian (driver), one Croatian, two Portuguese and one South African.
