The fire that has engulfed the Elbasan landfill for five days has created an alarming environmental and health situation for the surrounding community. Despite numerous interventions to bring the flames under control, the fires continue to be active deep inside, producing thick smoke and massive air pollution. Experts have described the situation as a direct threat to public health.
The firefighting operation has been faced with a significant shortage of inert materials. So far, over 20,000 cubic meters of soil have been dumped, while about 50 loaded trucks were brought from Tirana last night. Currently, 30 forces and 7 firefighting vehicles are engaged, working non-stop to stop the further spread of the flames.
To coordinate the response to the emergency, the Elbasan District Prefect, Ilir Bejtja, called an urgent meeting with all the mayors of the district. But the picture of the meeting was as disappointing as it was significant; out of 7 municipalities, only the mayor of Librazhd was physically present, while the others were represented by technical staff. The Civil Emergency Headquarters and Colonel Vladimir Nasufi also participated in the meeting.
Bejtja called for the use of every financial resource available to municipalities to create the necessary technical bases for managing such cases. Meanwhile, Colonel Nasufi pointed out the shortcomings in the initial intervention, emphasizing that the operation should have had a single and clear direction.
While institutions are busy with meetings, the smoke and smell of poison continue to suffocate hundreds of residents who have not received any real protection. The health consequences are inevitable and any institutional delay is simply an added harm to the community.
This is just another example of institutional failure in the face of emergencies that directly affect the lives of citizens. As the smoke rises over Elbasan, the silence of many mayors weighs heavily on the public conscience.
