The citizens of Durrës protested again today in front of the Municipality, after floods that left hundreds of homes under water. The protesters demanded the resignation of Mayor Emirana Sako due to the abuse of sewage funds and the hydropower project in the new port of Durrës.
Protesters have also raised suspicions that those residents who are not protesting today have been intimidated and blackmailed by the government, threatening them with compensation.
"Do you have anything in your hand? Are they going to kill you? I am your mother, I am 74 years old. Do you have parents? How are all these good people putting up with you? I am running out of patience!" said one of the protesters.
"It is clear that all these police officers came to escort the boys. They sent one to the police station. They did not arrest any of those who set off fireworks for the New Year, but free people. The right to protest is guaranteed by the law and the Constitution. Please do not be discouraged. Some were intimidated and did not come because they were told we will not give you compensation. This is the government of blackmail. Where there is money for bottles of wine, there is also lek for compensation," declares another resident.
