Analyst Andi Bushati has raised the alarm that the "Smart City" project poses a serious risk not only in terms of corruption, but also of national security and citizens' privacy.
According to Bushati, giving control of sensitive data to individuals linked to organized crime transforms this issue from a financial affair into a direct threat to fundamental freedoms, exposing citizens, journalists, businesses and activists to blackmail and pressure.
"It's not just a matter of corruption and that they steal our tax money. But you touched on it a little. Ahmetaj said it too. The problem was that Smart City went to Ergys Agasi. But who is Ergys Agasi? He is a man that we now have, with wiretaps with facts, who is a man who kidnapped people on behalf of organized crime and business competition. Imagine giving the data of our movements, our license plates, the restaurants we eat at, the highways we drive on in a package to organized crime. And this from a simple matter they steal from us, not only do they steal our tax money, but in a way they want to enter our homes. That tomorrow, a businessman with this data, you threaten him. You know the partners with whom he is doing a new business and you blackmail him. But you, a journalist who is going to do an investigative thing against corruption, you have all the information and you know where to blackmail him.
A civil society activist who is going to protest, you have all the data and you find a weak point and blackmail him. So, it's no longer that these people are stealing from us, but their collaboration with crime and the combination of crime-politics-administration has become not only a problem of theft for us, but also a security problem for us. And that's why I think that no matter how much we can be, let alone the money from tenders we are receiving, no no, they are stealing from us along with the money from tenders and our privacy and some rights.. ," he said on the show "Çim Peka Live" on Syri TV.
