Ilir Beqaj

Beqaj has prepared a maneuver to avoid the maximum sentence if found guilty...

Former Minister of Health, Ilir Beqaj, who has been in prison since July 4, 2024, has requested from the Special Court (GJKKO) a summary trial for the criminal case known as "SASPAC".

In his speech before the court, Beqaj initially denied the charges and requested the dismissal of the criminal case, or otherwise the return of the acts to SPAK for completion of the investigation. Beqaj also tried to have a maneuver for every possible scenario, as in the event of the file going to trial, the former minister requested a trial with a shortened procedure.

This procedure, according to the law, reduces the sentence by up to a third if the defendant is found guilty. So Beqaj has prepared a maneuver to avoid the maximum sentence if found guilty.

In the “SASPAC” file, SPAK accuses Beqaj of 6 criminal offenses in 27 episodes. The charges include corruption in 2 cases, violation of equality in tenders in 8 cases, falsification of documents in 9 cases, fraud with serious consequences in collaboration and concealment of assets in 3 cases. The investigations relate to the time when he headed the agency that managed EU funds.

We remind you that this is not the only case for which Beqaj is accused by SPAK. The former minister is being tried in parallel in the Special Court for "theft by abuse of office" in the form of a structured criminal group, during the signing of the "Sterilization" concession contract.

Regarding this matter, the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SCOC) has sentenced the former Deputy Minister of Health, Klodian Rrjepaj, to 6 years in prison. Businessman Ilir Rrapaj was sentenced to 6 years in prison. Marsela Sejranajt, Saimir Kadiu, Petref Mersini and Arben Gjata were sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in prison. While Naile Ajazi was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison. All received a reduced sentence after requesting a shortened trial.

Meanwhile, former Minister of Health Ilir Beqaj is being tried separately under ordinary procedure, outside of this part of the file that has already been closed.
