"Justice for the former KLA leaders," are expected to be the calls that will echo from Tirana, the capital of Albania, in support of 4 of the main figures in Kosovo's political life, who are being tried in The Hague.
Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi, and Rexhep Selimi have been in detention since November 2020, while they are being tried by the International Court based in The Hague for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The protest or rally in support of 4 of the former KLA leaders will be held at 'Skënderbej' Square, will start at 5:00 PM and is expected to last no more than two hours.
The chairman of OVL-UCK, Hysni Gucati, announced a few days ago that former Albanian president Alfred Moisiu and the chairman of DUI, Ali Ahmeti, will speak at this rally.
Today's protest is expected to be attended by politicians from the Socialist Party, its deputies, while from the opposition, the Democratic Party leader Sali Berisha said that he does not agree with such organizations. Berisha said that this protest does not serve the former leaders of the KLA. But from the ranks of the opposition, Fatmir Mediu, the Republican leader, is expected to join the rally as a citizen.
The President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani, has also come out in support of the protest. In a press conference, Osmani stressed that the Kosovo Liberation Army's war was just.
Përparim Rama, the mayor of Prishtina, and Lutfi Haziri, one of the main leaders of the LDK, will join the rally in defense of the former KLA leaders.
Mayor Rama has announced that he has signed a letter, which provides free transportation for all veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army who will protest in Tirana.
A day ago, distant remarks were exchanged between the Vetëvendosje Movement and Prime Minister Edi Rama regarding the protest to be held today.
"Reflection is not wrong, but in this regard, many of those who today oppose the Special Court were yesterday the biggest lobbyists for its establishment. Before protesting, these actors and politicians should show at least a minimum of remorse for their wrong positions in the past," LVV declared.
LVV has assessed that the institutions of Albania, a member state of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, NATO and the European Union, have the responsibility and opportunity to raise this issue in these international forums, where justice is discussed and decided, not in Tirana.
The Prime Minister of Albania, Edi Rama, reacted to these accusations on Thursday.
He accused the LVV of distorting previous positions on the Special Court, emphasizing that he himself has denounced in every case "the farce against Hashim Thaçi and others", while, according to him, "Self-Determination is known to have moved in that direction".
"The Vetëvendosje Movement has dedicated a long sheet to me, where it is written that 10 years ago I was in favor while they were against the Special Court... Meanwhile, I have denounced the farce against Hashim Thaçi and others whenever and wherever there was an opportunity or need," said Rama.
Since April 3, 2023, the main trial has been underway at the Special Court in The Hague against former President Hashim Thaçi, former Speakers of Parliament Kadri Veseli and Jakup Krasniqi, and former MP Rexhep Selimi, accused of war crimes and crimes against humanity, charges that all four have denied.
Another protest was held in The Hague on September 14, the day before the hearing of the first defense witness, former US Assistant Secretary of State James Rubin, began. The protest was held near the Special Court building, and was attended by about 10,000 Albanians from around the world.
