Gifts, various foods, the whole family gathered around the table sharing wishes and messages for a better and better year. However, the Catholic and Orthodox worlds seem to have some differences in terms of religious rites.
Catholic believers celebrate Christmas Eve during the evening of December 24, while for Orthodox believers the ceremony takes place during the morning of December 25.
The history of the Christmas tree
The Christmas tree has a history and is a fixed presence on Christmas Day. How did the tradition of decorating the Christmas tree come about and what are the types of trees used, how many trees are sold, what are the tallest, most famous, strangest trees in the world?
It seems that the first Christmas tree was used in Latvia around 1500. But it was only in 1841 that Prince Albert, Victoria's husband, introduced the custom of using the Christmas tree as an ornament to England.
Seeing the great use of this decorative element, there are whole "farms" that cultivate trees specially intended for the Christmas holiday.
The first company of this type was established in 1901 in the USA. But for every tree cut down, three more are cultivated on average. Almost a million Christmas trees are trashed every year in London alone. Not even 10% is recycled. Using the Christmas tree with electric lights was an idea of Edward Johnson in 1882, who was an assistant to Thomas Edison.
In terms of height, the tallest Christmas tree in the world is that of the Vatican, in St. Peter's Square, with a length of 30 meters.
