During the last 24 hours, about 8,000 citizens have entered Albania from the Kakavija border crossing and about 4,400 have left. From August 1 to 10, 2025, over 112,000 crossings were recorded, or about 20% more than the same period last year.
In Kakavija, 4 counters are operating from the Albanian side and 3 from the Greek side, and the average waiting time in line is about 40 minutes at peak load, reports "TCH".
Among the travelers, 65% are inbound and 35% are outbound, including many foreign tourists this year. It is interesting to note a trend of leaving for Greece no longer for work but for vacation. Even those who return are not simply emigrants, but beyond returning to their families, many of them come to explore Albania.
"I've been living in Greece for 25 years, but now I come to Albania more often. I'll go to Himara, Vlora and Durrës where I have a house. It's very beautiful here," said an immigrant from Himara who travels by motorbike.
Another citizen chose to arrive at noon to avoid the wait, saying they come regularly and not just for holidays.
"We're coming for a few days for a family matter, but we come often, usually twice a year," said another immigrant.
A family from Elbasan spent their holidays in Greece this year and are returning home through Kakavija.
"We are from Elbasan. We were on vacation in Greece and now we are going home. There is a little traffic, but it is not compared to previous years. There are a lot of cars, it is normal," he said.
Authorities have urged travelers to avoid peak times, take advantage of morning and afternoon trips, and consider using other border crossings with Greece to avoid delays.
