Fredi Beleri asked for permission to be sworn in as an MEP, the Prisons

The Prisons Committee will meet this afternoon to make a decision regarding Fredi Beler's request to be allowed to be sworn in as an MEP.

Fredi Beleri has requested to be temporarily released from prison, to go to Strasbourg, to take the oath as a member of the European Parliament.

The head of PBDNJ, Vangjel Dule, said yesterday that Fredi Beleri, who is in the prison of Fier where he is serving his sentence for buying votes, had received the permit and that he would travel on Monday towards Strasbourg, to sworn in as an MEP of the New Democracy in Greece.

However, this has been denied by the Directorate of Prisons, which in a reaction yesterday said that the permit for Fredi Beleri was not confirmed.

We remind you that Fredi Beleri is one of the MEPs of New Democracy, the party of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the European Parliament, part of the EPP grouping.

A few days ago, he made a request to the General Directorate of Prisons to allow his physical participation in the EP meeting, which will be held on July 15. Beleri has been sentenced by the Appeal of GJKKO to 2 years of imprisonment on the charge of electoral corruption, after he was arrested by the police two days before the elections of May 14, 2023.

However, the arrest did not prevent Beleri from winning the Municipality of Himara, but he did not manage to exercise the duty of the mayor, as he was not allowed by the Albanian judiciary to swear in front of the Municipal Council, as stipulated in the law.

Beleri has already lost his function as the elected mayor due to the decriminalization law and on August 4 the partial elections will take place in the Municipality of Himara. Some time ago, after a shadowy trial, the Special Court found SPAK's request right and found the elected mayor of Himara guilty of election corruption, despite the defense's claims of an irregular and politically influenced process.
