Journalists under threat after visit to Israel, UGSH denounces hate speech and

The Union of Albanian Journalists (UGSH) has reacted strongly today to a wave of verbal attacks, threats and serious stigmatization that have erupted online against a group of Albanian and Kosovar journalists who participated in a professional visit to Israel last week.

In an official statement, UGSH publicly condemns the aggressive language of some online media with a religious approach, which have targeted journalists participating in this trip, paving the way for lynching campaigns and encouraging media extremism on social networks.

“Religiously engaged media have launched a fierce verbal attack, encouraging extremists in cyberspace to attack journalists, even making dangerous threats,” the Union's response states. Meanwhile, through social networks and various online sites, journalists have become the object of insults, blackmail and labeling, a reality that the UGSH describes as an unprecedented incident.

According to UGSH, the journalists demonstrated professionalism and correctness during their visit to one of the most delicate areas of the globe, and did not commit any ethical or political transgressions in their reporting or public reflections.

Full reaction

In recent days, the UGSH has received several complaints from colleagues who, together with a group of colleagues from the region, mainly from Kosovo, participated in a visit to Israel last week.

Religiously engaged online media have launched a fierce verbal attack, encouraging numerous extremists in the virtual space to attack colleagues, going as far as making dangerous threats. These media spaces have been flooded with publications that lynch and insult colleagues participating in this trip. This is an unprecedented incident. Such attitudes of colleagues and engaged media encourage the extremism and aggressiveness of various militants and fanatics.

The Albanian Journalists Union supports and encourages the free organization and movement of journalists and strongly supports the reporting independence of every colleague. In the case of the colleagues' visit to Israel, we note that they have demonstrated correctness and responsibility for every case of reaction and reflection from the days of the visit to the country that is at the epicenter of global attention due to the war in Gaza.

UGSH has been waiting with concern for the denunciations of colleagues participating in this visit, who, through social media pages and many online sites, are under a barrage of threats, insults, blackmail and unusual stigmatization.

UGSH appeals for an end to such attacks in the country's media space and denounces all cases of threats or blackmail coming from individuals or radical groups and entities directly or indirectly.

We ask security and law enforcement institutions to monitor these threats and hold their perpetrators and those who ordered them legally accountable.
