A 3-year-old girl has risked her life after swallowing 62 magnetic beads.
The minor was urgently sent by her parents to the Pediatric Hospital, where doctors discovered through imaging the unusual amount of foreign bodies in her stomach.
Speaking about the case, gastrohepatologist Virtut Velmishi spoke about the complicated procedure that saved the little girl's life.
" The girl arrived around 10:00 PM and the doctor on duty referred me to the MRI. A conglomerate of magnetic spheres was identified. She had swallowed about 62 magnetic spheres, which could severely damage the digestive tract and endanger the child's life ," said Dr. Velmishi.
According to him, this is a unique case due to the large amount of objects swallowed. Although it presented great difficulties, the medical team managed to extract the beads through an endoscopic procedure, avoiding surgery.
" Think of a stomach the size of an orange, where you have to remove a large mass of magnetic spheres. Endoscopy and a child's esophagus do not easily allow this. We managed to divide it into four parts and, with an endoscopic basket, we were able to successfully perform the procedure. The child was saved from surgical intervention and returned home within the day in good health ," he added.
Although the case ended successfully, doctors appeal for more care for children, especially those aged 1-3. Emergency cases due to swallowing foreign objects are daily.
" Special care should be taken with button batteries. They are very dangerous and can cause burns to the esophagus within just two hours ," doctors warn. /Euronews Albania
